Automechanika Launches Body & Paint World Championships

Automechanika is holding the first international Body & Paint competition in the exhibition’s history, in association with DeBeer Refinish, Octotal and SATA. Body shop professionals will be competing against one another at six Automechanika shows worldwide, from England to China, with the national event winners to travel to Automechanika Frankfurt for the grand finale from 8 to 12 September 2020.

Automechanika Frankfurt will be the first Automechanika event to feature Body & Paint as an independent product category in 2020, and organisers are celebrating the occasion by launching an international competition, with events taking place in six countries.

Body & Paint professionals will go head to head and compete with other national body shops by designing the bonnet of a car, using the country in which the local Automechanika fair is being held as their inspiration. The event series will be launched for the first time at Automechanika Birmingham from 4 to 6 June 2019, and will be followed by competitions in Johannesburg, Shanghai, Dubai and Mexico City. In each location, a panel of experts will pick a national winner, who will then get to go to Frankfurt for the finals. In addition, trade visitors will be able to help select the people’s choice winner by voting for their personal favourites at the event and online.

The competition criteria include design uniqueness, the link between the design and the country in which the local Automechanika event is taking place, the use of various techniques (effects, matt/glossy finish, etc.), a harmonious colour palette and the type of spray guns used, and workshop safety considerations and the use of environmentally friendly products. Work that relies solely on transfers or airbrushing is not the focal point of this contest.

Kick-off in Birmingham

The first stage of the contest will take place at Automechanika Birmingham from 4 to 6 June 2019. With the support of Debeer Refinish and Octoral as headline sponsor, as well as SATA and the UK’s NBRA (National Body and Repair Association), various workshop teams will be presenting their designs at the event while offering visitors insight into the creation of their artwork with photos and videos.

“It is great to be able to see the creativity and artistry with which the painters approach their task,” said Wineth Malvar, Global Marketing Director – Brand, Channel & Segment, Automotive Finishes Division for Sherwin-Williams. “We are proud to be a part of this industry and are looking forward to seeing what the first round of the competition has to offer at Automechanika Birmingham.”

Sherwin-Williams Showcases “Mastery of Refinishing” At Automechanika 2018

Sherwin-Williams, through its Automotive Finishes division, brought over 100 years of experience in vehicle refinishing to life at Automechanika Frankfurt.

The event follows Sherwin-Williams’ successful acquisition of Valspar last year and is already generating significant success and opportunities for the combined business and this was a key talking-point at Automechanika.

“This was a great first event for us as a combined organisation in Europe which generated significant interest in Sherwin-Williams, our refinishing brands and our tools to support digital colour matching,” said Theo Wemmers, Executive General Manager Automotive EMEA.

“It was also an excellent opportunity to meet partners and customers, explain how we are looking to help their businesses become more profitable and productive, and discuss the latest trends in vehicle refinishing.

“These are exciting times for Sherwin-Williams and we look forward to accelerating the growth potential of our partners and customers.”

The theme of the company’s stand at Automechanika Frankfurt was ‘Mastery of Refinishing’, telling the story of its decades of experience in vehicle refinishing as well as its focus on digital innovation. A virtual reality refinishing experience received high engagement with over 700 participants, a preview of its brand-new digital spectrophotometer (due for release in 2019) and demo of its new online training programme brought the digital focus to life.

Important highlights from the show included a series of launches and announcements about the company’s major refinishing brands, including:

DeBeer – Delegates learned about the DeBeer Difference and how a brand with over 100 years of heritage is as committed today as it ever was to providing quality products, unmatched service and support.

Octoral – The bold campaign promoting the visionary approach of this premium brand was featured at Automechanika, forming one of the event’s most eye-catching displays.

It was announced that Prospray will become available in more markets in the EMEA region in 2019, giving more customers access to the brand’s passion for perfection.

The range of eight new body fillers, part of the Spralac BodyWorks range was also launched at the show.

Automechanika Frankfurt Kicks Off 25th Edition With New Records

Automechanika Frankfurt 2018 has opened its doors with more than 5000 exhibitors showing off their wares across the 12 halls of the Frankfurt Messe. The fair brings together the many trends, large and small, of the automotive aftermarket and collision repair industry, opening this year to an array of innovations in the fields of equipment, parts, accessories, management and services.

Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt, said: “Growth in the automotive aftermarket continues unabated; this is shown by a renewed participation in a record number of exhibitors for the 25th edition. This year we also expect guests from over 170 countries. They will be focusing on technological progress, knowledge transfer and forging new alliances.”

The best of the best entries for the Automechanika Innovation Awards were honoured at a presentation ceremony on the first day in the Forum, with 10 winners in three categories chosen from a total of 120 entries (58 nominees and 36 finalists along with the 10 winners). The jury of eight experts was made up of representatives of the industry, trade, associations, science and media, with judging criteria being innovative content, solution excellence, functionality, aftermarket relevance, safety, security, quality, contribution to environmental protection, resource conservation and sustainability.

Around a third of entries came from Germany and two thirds from outside the country; 10 per cent of those entries were from outside the European Union. There was also an above-average increase in the number of entries from outside Germany – a trend that has been apparent for several years. The majority of entries were products and solutions from the workshop equipment segment, including tools, measuring devices and aids, in the categories Repair & Maintenance, and Repair & Diagnostics.

Automechanika Frankfurt 2018 is being held across all 12 halls at the Frankfurt Messe, with Hall 11 dedicated to the Body and Paint section. BodyShop News is exhibiting at stand 11.1 D63.
