Car Manufacturer Use of the Word ‘Autonomous’ Dangerous: Thatcham Research

Thatcham Research and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) issued an urgent call to car manufacturers and legislators for greater clarity around the capability of vehicles sold with technology that does more and more driving on behalf of motorists. The call comes in the wake of growing reports of people crashing while over-relying on technology which is not yet designed to drive the car independently.

The risks to drivers have been outlined in the new ‘Assisted and Automated Driving Definition and Assessment’ paper, which has identified dangerous grey areas associated with some driver support technologies. These include misleading names, like Autopilot and ProPilot, given to systems by car manufacturers, how and when drivers should take back control of their vehicles and systems which are designed to work in specific situations only (e.g. on motorways) but can also function anywhere.

Matthew Avery, Head of Research at Thatcham Research said, “We are starting to see real-life examples of the hazardous situations that occur when motorists expect the car to drive and function on its own. Specifically, where the technology is taking ownership of more and more of the driving task, but the motorist may not be sufficiently aware that they are still required to take back control in problematic circumstances. Fully Automated vehicles that can own the driving task from A to B, with no need for driver involvement whatsoever, won’t be available for many years to come. Until then, drivers remain criminally liable for the safe use of their cars and as such, the capability of current road vehicle technologies must not be oversold.”

Avery continues, “It begins with how systems are named and described across car manufacturer marketing materials and the driver’s handbook. Names like Autopilot or ProPilot are deeply unhelpful, as they infer the car can do a lot more than it can. Absolute clarity is needed, to help drivers understand the when and how these technologies are designed to work and that they should always remain engaged in the driving task.”

James Dalton, Director of General Insurance Policy at the ABI, said, “Insurers are major supporters of efforts to get assisted and autonomous vehicles onto the UK’s roads. Given the part human error plays in the overwhelming majority of accidents, these technologies have the potential to dramatically improve road safety. However, we are a long way from fully autonomous cars which will be able to look after all parts of a journey and in the meantime, it remains crucial that all drivers are alert and ready to take back full control at a moment’s notice. Manufacturers must be responsible in how they describe and name what their vehicles can do, and the insurance industry is ready to hold them to account on this.”

Axalta Celebrates the Winners of the 2018 WorldSkills National Championship for Vehicle Painting

VACC Names Victoria’s Best Body Repairers

Twenty-four Victorian body repair businesses have been named as finalists for the 2018 VACC Industry Awards. VACC Executive Director, Geoff Gwilym, said the awards demonstrated members’ commitment to quality.

“Short-listed from a record 276 entries, the cream has risen to the top in 2018, VACC’s centenary year. These finalists are the best in the Victorian automotive industry,” he said. “VACC was overwhelmed by the number of entries received from all over Victoria this year. Judging these entrants and narrowing down the field to the finalists was not an easy task.”

Ten expert judges evaluated entries based on customer service, professional and technical development, industry improvement, and environmental and occupational health and safety. To ensure that only the finest of VACC’s more than 5000 members would be announced as category winners, an independent standards representative audited the judging.

“VACC wishes all of the finalists the best of luck and recommends these businesses to Victorian motorists,” said Gwilym.

Victorian Government Boosts Trade Training

The Victorian state government has allocated $172 million for 30 free TAFE and 18 pre-apprenticeship courses in its 2018/19 budget. The courses include Certificate II in Automotive Body Repair and Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation. An additional allocation of $304 million has been set for new classes and 30,000 TAFE places.

Treasurer Tim Pallas said the new funding will help solve the state’s skills shortage.

“We have to recognise that there are people out there who have skills and aptitudes who should be appropriately rewarded and the government needs to pay a substantial part in skilling those capacities,” he said.

“As we make these investments we would anticipate that we would see more and more people attracted to the technical skills and activities.”

Overseas and interstate students can apply for the courses, though the government says most students will be Victorian. Students who are already studying are ineligible.

The courses run for up to two years and will be reviewed annually.

Described by Minister for Training and Skills, Gayle Tierney, as the biggest overhaul of TAFE, skills and training in Victoria’s history, the program also includes $50 million to fund an additional year at school for trade students. These students will now gain their trade qualification and VCE in an apprenticeships and traineeships program to be rolled out at 100 public schools.

The government will also create two new regional education centres at Bendigo Kangan Institute McCrae campus and the Federation Training campus at Port of Sale, while Federation Training’s Morwell campus will receive a substantial upgrade.

Blackstone Buys AMA Group’s Panel Repair Business For $508 Million

AMA Group has agreed to sell its vehicle repair business to global private equity asset manager, Blackstone, for $508 million.

The group has entered into two transactions that will lead to the demerger of its automotive component, accessory and procurement business (ACAD) and the purchase of the remaining vehicle panel repair business by Blackstone. Both transactions are subject to approval by AMA shareholders.

AMA Group Directors unanimously recommend shareholders vote in favour of both transactions.

Under the first transaction, AMA will demerge its ACAD business into a new company to be listed on the Australian Securities Exchange.  AMA Group shareholders will receive one share in the new ACAD company for each share they own in AMA Group.  The AMA board expects ACAD will have an initial value per share of 32 to 36 cents, while the panel repair component is valued at 86 cents per share.

AMA Executive Chairman, Ray Malone, said the board has addressed the challenge of funding two growing but distinct businesses by separating ACAD in to a new ASX listed company.

“This separation will ensure that neither business has its prospects limited by the competing demands of the other business for board and management attention and financial resources. Each business will be able to realise its full potential with significant benefits to customers, employees and shareholders,” he said.

AMA Group Vehicle Panel Repair CEO, Andrew Hopkins, who will continue as CEO of the Panel Business after he acquisition by Blackstone, said “Over the past two years, we have rapidly grown our vehicle panel repair operations to over 100 sites and in the process changed the way the industry engages with its primary customers, the insurance companies, to the ultimate benefit of their customers, the policyholders.
