Axalta Releases 2021 Global Automotive Colour Popularity Report

Axalta’s 69th annual Global Automotive Colour Popularity Report covering 2021 reveals most cars on the road are white (35 per cent), black (19 per cent) and grey (19 per cent), with grey increasing by four percentage points worldwide.

Axalta said white vehicles have been the most abundant worldwide since 2011, with Asia leading in white vehicle builds. Overall, the popularity of white hit a long-term high of 39 per cent in 2017 and has seen declines in several regions each year since. This year, white declined three percentage points, largely due to a decrease seen in all regions, especially China with a seven per cent decrease.

According to the report, Europe is the only major region to report grey as the most popular colour (for the third year in a row) at 27 per cent. Silver is most popular in South America as it ranks second place with 23 per cent usage. Black is found most in Europe at 22 per cent and continues to lead in the luxury segment. North America has the most amount of new red cars, at eight per cent.

The results of Axalta’s Global Automotive Colour Popularity Report are tabulated on Axalta’s analysis of 2021 automotive build data in major markets and are an indicator of current market trends.
